It was quite different inside D9. She felt small. Insignificant. Another insect instead of a goddess, surrounded by smaller, less significant insects. Beside her, Junior, and some of her closest advisers and bodyguards stood on one of the core terraces overlooking D-Base. They were dwarfed by the endless rows of balconies that disappeared behind a breathable mist.
Despite its many similarities with the other Diamonds, there was something slightly off about D9. Inside and out. Its features betrayed a fragmented past, veiled in secrecy and speculation beyond our modulesâ data. Everyone knew about the material shortage during construction, and the later abandonment of an unfinished D10 to the elements down at the G. Pero no one knew exactly how the USMC had made it to nine out of ten, especially considering the shitstorm going on back then. To the west, war and a fast-approaching radioactive fallout. At the city itself, construction of The Wall was underway, and a raging epidemic ran rampant across what would become the underworld. Diamonds were New Miamiâs only hope. So, how did they manage to build the last one?
We had plenty of theories and uninformed opinions on the issue, as with anything else regarding our cityâs past. Wall stories. Archival fragments. Altogether made-up tales, shared and distorted in perpetuity. Pero, assuming a minimal shred of truth, or a somewhat believable source, over time we had gathered enough clues to allow for a small degree of consensus.
Apparently, hundreds of spare alloy panels had been left behind at the G following construction of the dam. Each one was fifty squared meters of assembly-ready, environmentally proofed building material, designed to both withstand the mighty ocean and repeal its radioactive waters until the end of times. They were also located near where the other Diamonds had been built, which made them ideal for D9 and D10. Pero that would have been lucky, and there was no luck left on earth. Upon arriving on site, the builders discovered over half the panels had a strange rust growing along their edges. They were ruined. Unusable. Mierda mala. Asà es que, a new and more urgent challenge emerged; where else could the USMC find enough materials of similar quality to make up for the unforeseen deficit?
Decisions had to be made. The Wall and the dam would have been out of the question. Both were in place to protect the city. Remove a piece, and who knew what could happen. The only possible choice left for USMC was Refugio Merida, a decommissioned scientific megastation southwest of the city, across the G.
Merida, embedded into the continental shelf near the ruins of an Old World city, had existed since long before New Miami. Albeit far, there was nowhere else to go. The alloy panels lining its outer shell had been built using top-grade components, which remained of extraordinary quality centuries later. Pero our distant neighbor didnât come without its downsides. Each panel was significantly smaller than those used in previous Diamonds, and there were still several thousand Meridianos living at the station.
